Compliance: what you need to know

Who is exempt?
Only owner-occupied homes purchased before January 1, 2022 are exempt from the new laws. They must still meet existing standards, including working smoke alarms on every level and replacing faulty or outdated units.
When do the new laws apply to rentals?
Any home or unit being sold, leased, or renewing a lease must comply with the updated smoke alarm regulations.
What about new and renovated homes?
Building certifiers will ensure compliance during approval for new builds and major renovations.
